TV and social go together like peanut butter and jelly, so it’s no big surprise that television show fans continued their strong engagement on social media in 2016. Here’s Shareablee’s list of the Top 10 most engaged social programs of 2016 based on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Daily News Shows
Daily news shows performed well again in 2016. ESPN’s SportsCenter took the top spot and experienced a whopping 101% year-over-year growth with almost one billion total actions across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. NBC Universal’s E! News held steady in fourth place with 189 million total actions. With 46,000 posts, the entertainment news program had the most content of any Top 10 property.
The syndicated Ellen DeGeneres Show captured 68% of all talk show social engagement in 2016. The daytime program had 367 million total actions, ranking it in second place. NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was the top show on late night with 78 million total actions, taking the eighth spot overall.
In the race for top morning show on social, ABC’s Good Morning America bested NBC’s The Today Show , coming in sixth and seventh respectively. Good Morning America was up 31% over 2015 with more than 103 million total actions, while the Today Show suffered a 5% decline with 91 million actions.
In primetime TV, Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars continued to rule social with their very engaged fans, garnering 276 million total actions, coming in third overall. AMC’s The Walking Dead snagged the fifth spot with 142 million actions, while MTV’s Teen Wolf and Freeform’s Shadowhunters rounded out the top 10. In only its second season, Shadowhunters experienced the most year-over-year growth with 63 million total actions, a massive 612% increase.
Fall’s Best New Primetime Shows
NBC’s This Is Us was the top new fall show on primetime with 4 million total actions, 451% more than the next best performing show. Coming in a distant second was Fox’s limited series Pitch with 900,000 actions, followed by ABC’s Designated Survivor with 800,000.
It's worth noting that, with the exception of The Walking Dead, the top primetime TV shows are all geared toward young adults, proving Gen Z and Millennials are a super socially active fan base. News programs like SportsCenter and E! News continue to do really well, likely because these shows are on daily, so they have lots of fresh content to share. Daytime programs frequently integrate social media components like polls and contests into shows, which explains their high engagement levels.
