Even with a large number of followers, untargeted content does not generate the kind of engagement that brands want, and may even be detrimental. Therefore, content strategy has to be aligned with your audience’s interests, as well as the top trends in your industry for engaging large factions of your target audience.
The first step is understanding your audience. By understanding the demographics and psychographics of both your current audience and the audience you’re looking to reach, you can tailor your content to engage these specific groups.
In addition to knowing your audience, it is key to identify the top content across your industry and among your competitors. This information will let you focus on the content that generates the most engagement with your target audience.
Equally important to a content strategy’s success is keeping an eye on the metrics and data behind each post. This includes things such as tracking engagement levels, including likes, reactions, shares, and comments on your posts. These analytics allow you to measure and compare the different types of posts you put out, ultimately identifying the best content to continue with.
With the increased importance of paid media within the space, it’s important not to underestimate the importance of content strategy to the success of your social media efforts.
HGTV is a great example of a company that focuses on content strategy to increase audience engagement with their page. In H1 2017, despite putting out the lowest number of posts in April, HGTV received the highest engagement in that month by creating content around repurposed objects from around the home, which historically has been a popular topic for HGTV’s social audience.
