Top Social Media Posts 2017

As part of our effort to share the best moment on social in 2017, we are releasing the top performing posts that generated the highest engagement from audiences throughout Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in 2017.
The top three performing Facebook content for 2017 were all viral video posts. Blossom, a media publisher, topped the charts for producing the number one Facebook post with a video that showcased seven clever organization hacks. The video generated over 10.2 million actions and 410 million video views, making it the most engaging content on Facebook for 2017.
The Facebook page for the movie Rings took the number two spot with a humorous video showing a prank where Samara, the main character from the movie, crawls out of a rigged television set in Prisco Appliance & Electronics in White Plains, New York and scares unsuspecting store visitors. This video received 9.4 million actions and 341 million video views.
People Are Awesome came in at number three with a video showing people undertaking awesome stunts such as flipping down staircases and trampolining off the top of buildings. This video achieved 7.9 million total actions and an overwhelming 526 million video views. Other top performing content includes posts made by America’s Got Talent showing 12-year-old ventriloquist Darci Lynne, and FC Barcelona’s victory against PSG.
In contrast to this, 2016 saw Vin Diesel take out the top three posts for Facebook by updating his cover photo three times. Each of these posts generated 7.7 million total actions. Other top performing content were posted by Cristiano Ronaldo and media publishers Bright Side and Power of Positivity.
Of the top three tweets for 2017, two were photos while one was a text post. Barack Obama held the top spot with a tweet about loving everyone despite the color of their skin, their background or religion. This tweet generated 6.1 million total actions. Of the top 20 posts for 2017, 55% was posted from the personal account of Barack Obama while an additional 15% was posted by President Obama, the Obama administration’s Twitter account. As such, 70% of the top 20 posts came from either Barack Obama himself or his administration.
The second highest top performing tweet came from Ariana Grande with a text post where she apologised to the victims and families of the Manchester Arena bombing that occurred on May 22, 2017 and received 3.8 million total actions.
16-year-old high school junior Carter Wilkerson from Reno, Nevada, took out the third top tweet with a photo that showed him asking American fast food chain Wendy’s how many retweets it would take to get free chicken nuggets for an entire year, to which Wendy’s responded with 18 million. This viral tweet saw Carter Wilkerson achieve 3.4 million actions in total.
On the other hand, 2016 saw two text posts and one link post make the top three tweets of the year. Spanish personality El Rubius took out the top post with a tweet about the album Lemonade by Beyoncé just eight days before the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. This post received 2.1 million total actions. Hillary Clinton came in second place with a tweet aimed at young girls asking them to never doubt that they are valuable, powerful and deserving. Hillary Clinton’s tweet, which generated 1.6 million total actions, was also posted on the same day that Donald Trump was announced President-elect of the United States. Finally, the third top post was by American online personality Adam Saleh who tweeted about getting kicked off a Delta Air Lines flight because he spoke Arabic. This tweet likewise achieved 1.6 million total actions.
On Instagram, the top performing posts for 2017 were all photos. The number one spot was taken by Cristiano Ronaldo with a photo showing his newborn daughter and girlfriend in the hospital. This post received 11 million total actions.
Beyoncé then took out both the second and third top posts with a photo showcasing her baby bump and announcing that she is pregnant with twins, and another photo of her holding the one-month-old twins. These posts generated 10.5 million and 10.1 million total actions respectively.
On the contrary, while the top performing Instagram posts from 2016 were also posted by celebrities, these were posted by Justin Bieber who took out the first post while Selena Gomez took out second and third. Justin Bieber’s post, which achieved 4 million total actions, showed him kissing then girlfriend Selena Gomez. Selena Gomez’s top posts, on the other hand, showed her announcing herself as brand ambassador for the luxury fashion company Coach and another photo taken for the “Share a Coke and a Song” campaign for Coca-Cola. These posts garnered 3.8 million and 3.7 million total actions respectively.
